Tips & Variations
- Apple choices:
Braeburn, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, or Honeycrisp are all great baking apples. - Sweeter / less sweet:
- For a less sweet loaf, you can safely reduce the sugar (many bakers like 1 cup in the original version; this updated one is already reduced to ¾ cup).
- Texture tweaks:
- Use shredded apple instead of chunks for a tighter, moister crumb.
- Add-ins:
- Chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
- Raisins or dried cranberries
- Swap part of the white sugar for brown sugar for a light caramel note
- Toppings:
- Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar before baking or
- Add a simple oat streusel for extra crunch.
Storage
- Room temperature:
- Wrap tightly or store in an airtight container for 2–3 days.
- Refrigerator:
- Keeps up to 5 days; bring slices to room temp or warm slightly before serving.
- Freezer:
- Wrap whole loaf or individual slices well and freeze up to 3 months.
- Thaw at room temperature (keep wrapped while thawing so it re-absorbs moisture).
