Ingredients
- 1 medium watermelon
- 1 cantaloupe (or honeydew)
- 3 bananas
- 12 strawberries
- Optional extras: pineapple chunks, blueberries, cherries, or grapes
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare the watermelon base Cut off the top ⅛ portion of your watermelon to create a flat surface. Scoop out the inside with a spoon and save the watermelon flesh for later.
- Carve the jack-o’-lantern face Flip the watermelon onto the flat cut side. Using a small paring knife, carefully carve out triangle eyes, a nose, and a jagged mouth. Make the mouth large enough for the fruit salad to “spill out.”
- Cut the fruit Chop the watermelon flesh, cantaloupe, and bananas into bite-sized cubes. Hull the strawberries and cut them into halves or quarters depending on size.
- Assemble the tray Place the carved watermelon jack-o’-lantern toward the back of a serving platter. Arrange the cut fruit spilling out of the mouth and spreading across the tray to create the “vomiting” effect.
- Serve and enjoy Refrigerate until ready to serve, then place it on your party table as a spooky centerpiece.
Pro Tips
- For a creepier effect, drizzle strawberry or raspberry puree over the fruit to look like “blood.”
- Use a marker to sketch the face on the watermelon before carving for better precision.
- Let the kids help cut soft fruits like bananas or strawberries—they’ll love being part of the process!
