Description

Get into the Halloween spirit with these fun and spooky cheeseburger skulls! Made with homemade skull-shaped buns and topped with melted cheese, these burgers are sure to impress your guests at any Halloween party or gathering.

Ingredients

  • 5 tbsp (56 g) salted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups (420 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp (9 g) instant yeast
  • ¾ cup (170 g) lukewarm water (100-110°F)
  • 32 oz 80/20 ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp butter, lard (bacon fat), or vegetable oil
  • 8 slices white cheese (American, Cheddar, Provolone, Havarti, etc.)
  • Burger toppings: Tomato, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, onions, pickles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Buns: Grease the skull cavities in your Nordic Ware skull pans with butter. Mix the butter, flour, egg, sugar, salt, yeast, and warm water until blended. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth, then cover and let rise for 1-2 hours.
  2. Shape the Buns: After the dough rises, divide it into 8 pieces, press into the pans, and let rise for another hour. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  3. Bake the Buns: Bake for 14-18 minutes, depending on the desired color, and brush with melted butter when they cool.
  4. Make the Burgers: Shape the ground beef into skull-shaped patties. Cook in a skillet with butter until desired doneness, adding cheese on top to melt.
  5. Assemble the Cheeseburger Skulls: Place a cheeseburger between the two halves of your skull-shaped buns, adding your favorite toppings like ketchup, lettuce, and tomatoes.

Notes

Make the buns up to 3 days ahead and store in an airtight container. For a juicy reheated burger, cook to rare and then reheat at 350°F for 5 minutes in an air fryer. For thinner buns, use 75g of dough per bun and adjust the burger size accordingly.
