Description

A comforting and traditional Southern dish made with chicken and fluffy dumplings, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the chicken pieces and chicken broth. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the chicken is fully cooked. Remove the chicken and shred the meat.
  2. In the same pot, add the chopped onions, celery, and carrots to the broth. Cook until softened.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir in the milk and melted butter until just combined.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling batter into the simmering broth. Cover the pot and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the dumplings are fluffy and cooked through.
  5. Gently return the shredded chicken to the pot and stir to combine.
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add herbs and spices like bay leaves or thyme during simmering. You can also use rotisserie chicken for convenience.
