Description
Creamy and cheesy scalloped potatoes baked to perfection, perfect for family dinners and holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
- 4 cups potatoes (thinly sliced)
- 3 tablespoons butter (for the cheese sauce)
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for the roux)
- 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (grated, for the sauce)
- 1/2 cup extra cheese (cheddar or Gruyère, grated, for topping)
- Salt (to taste)
- 1/2 cup green onions (optional, sliced for garnish)
- A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for added heat)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- In a medium saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in 3 tablespoons of flour to create a roux and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden.
- Gradually add 1 1/2 cups of milk, whisking constantly to eliminate lumps.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 cups of grated sharp cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Season with salt and a pinch of cayenne if desired.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
- Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup of extra grated cheese on top.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and allow the dish to rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with sliced green onions if desired.
Notes
Use a mandoline slicer for uniform potato slices. Feel free to customize with different cheeses or add cooked bacon and herbs.
