Prep Time: 30 minutes
Setting Time: 4 hours
Total Time: 4 hours 30 minutes
Servings: 15 brains

Ingredients

4 tbsp butter
2 cups pink and white marshmallows
¼ tsp salt
4 cups Rice Krispies (or any crispy rice cereal)
1 tube red writing icing (optional, for decoration)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Line a large tray with non-stick paper.
  2. Place a pan on the stove and half fill with boiling water. Put butter and marshmallows in a heatproof bowl and set it over the water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water.
  3. Stir occasionally until the butter has melted and the marshmallows are smooth and fully combined. Add salt and stir.
  4. Turn off the heat. Add Rice Krispies and gently stir until all the cereal is evenly coated.
  5. Lightly oil two tablespoons, scoop out a mound of mixture, and shape it into an oval brain shape on the prepared tray. Flatten slightly with oiled fingers.
  6. To create the indent, lightly oil a table knife and press it through the center of the mound, forming two hemispheres. Adjust shape with fingers if needed.
  7. Continue shaping until all mixture is used.
  8. Drizzle or dot with red writing icing to add a gory brain effect.
  9. Allow to set for 4–5 hours before serving.

Pro Tips

Use a mix of pink and white marshmallows for the best color.
Keep a small dish of oil nearby to prevent the mixture from sticking to your fingers and tools.
Make the brains while the mixture is still warm — it’s much easier to shape.
