Description
A hearty Amish-style Hamburger Steak Bake with juicy patties and rich mushroom gravy, perfect for a comforting dinner.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 ½ cups crushed saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
- All-purpose flour (for dredging)
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 2 (10.75 oz) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1 ½ cups whole milk
- 1 ½ tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk, then stir in parsley. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, crushed saltines, milk, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into evenly sized patties.
- Dredge each patty in flour, coating both sides lightly.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties on both sides until golden brown, working in batches if necessary. The centers will still be slightly undercooked.
- Transfer browned patties to the prepared baking dish. Pour the mushroom gravy mixture evenly over the top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30–40 minutes, until patties are cooked through and tender.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving. Serve with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice.
Notes
Don’t overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender. Use 80/20 ground beef for best flavor.
