Description

A hearty Amish-style Hamburger Steak Bake with juicy patties and rich mushroom gravy, perfect for a comforting dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 ½ cups crushed saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • All-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 (10.75 oz) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 ½ tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk, then stir in parsley. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, crushed saltines, milk, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  4. Shape the mixture into evenly sized patties.
  5. Dredge each patty in flour, coating both sides lightly.
  6. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties on both sides until golden brown, working in batches if necessary. The centers will still be slightly undercooked.
  7. Transfer browned patties to the prepared baking dish. Pour the mushroom gravy mixture evenly over the top.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30–40 minutes, until patties are cooked through and tender.
  9. Let rest a few minutes before serving. Serve with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice.

Notes

Don’t overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender. Use 80/20 ground beef for best flavor.
