Description

A delicious treat made with saltine crackers topped with a rich toffee and chocolate layer.

Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 package)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (about 1 package)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 baking sheet with parchment paper or foil and spray with non-stick spray.
  2. Lay the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared sheet. Break some in half if needed to fill all gaps.
  3. In a small pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and bring to a boil. Let it bubble for 3 minutes without stirring.
  4. Pour the caramel evenly over the crackers, spreading it with a spatula. Bake for 5–7 minutes until bubbly. Remove and let cool for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the warm toffee. Return to the warm (turned off) oven for 30–60 seconds, just until the chocolate softens. Spread it evenly with a spatula.
  6. Cool for 20 minutes, then refrigerate for 3–4 hours. Once set, lift from the pan, peel off parchment, and break or cut into pieces.

Notes

Use real butter for a richer flavor and proper toffee texture. Don’t stir the caramel to avoid a grainy result. For variety, top with chopped nuts, candy cane bits, or M&Ms before chilling.
