Description
A delicious treat made with saltine crackers topped with a rich toffee and chocolate layer.
Ingredients
- 40 saltine crackers (about 1 package)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups chocolate chips (about 1 package)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 baking sheet with parchment paper or foil and spray with non-stick spray.
- Lay the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared sheet. Break some in half if needed to fill all gaps.
- In a small pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and bring to a boil. Let it bubble for 3 minutes without stirring.
- Pour the caramel evenly over the crackers, spreading it with a spatula. Bake for 5–7 minutes until bubbly. Remove and let cool for 1–2 minutes.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the warm toffee. Return to the warm (turned off) oven for 30–60 seconds, just until the chocolate softens. Spread it evenly with a spatula.
- Cool for 20 minutes, then refrigerate for 3–4 hours. Once set, lift from the pan, peel off parchment, and break or cut into pieces.
Notes
Use real butter for a richer flavor and proper toffee texture. Don’t stir the caramel to avoid a grainy result. For variety, top with chopped nuts, candy cane bits, or M&Ms before chilling.
