Ingredients
- 4 large russet potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
- 1 cup whole milk (warm)
- 3 cloves garlic (crushed finely)
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly butter a baking dish.
- Slice the potatoes into thin, even rounds about 2mm thick using a mandoline slicer or sharp knife.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat; add the crushed garlic and sauté for 1 minute.
- Stir in the flour, cooking for 30 seconds, then gradually whisk in warm milk, stirring until thickened.
- Layer sliced potatoes in the dish, seasoning each layer with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
- Pour the creamy sauce over the potatoes, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top generously.
- Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbling.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a twist, substitute cheddar with Gruyère or mozzarella. For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or cooked bacon.
