Description

Ingredients

  • 4 large russet potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 3 cloves garlic (crushed finely)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper, to taste


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly butter a baking dish.
  2. Slice the potatoes into thin, even rounds about 2mm thick using a mandoline slicer or sharp knife.
  3. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat; add the crushed garlic and sauté for 1 minute.
  4. Stir in the flour, cooking for 30 seconds, then gradually whisk in warm milk, stirring until thickened.
  5. Layer sliced potatoes in the dish, seasoning each layer with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  6. Pour the creamy sauce over the potatoes, ensuring they are well-coated.
  7. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top generously.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbling.
  10. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a twist, substitute cheddar with Gruyère or mozzarella. For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or cooked bacon.
