Description

A comforting dish of thinly sliced potatoes enveloped in a rich, creamy cheese sauce, perfect for family gatherings and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Russet Potatoes (peeled and sliced into ¼-inch slices, about 2 pounds)
  • 1 piece Yellow Onion (sliced into rings)
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
  • ½ teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 2 cups Whole Milk (room temperature)
  • 1 ½ cups Mild Cheddar Cheese (shredded)
  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, until lightly golden.
  4. Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
  5. Stir in the salt and half of the cheese until it melts.
  6. Layer the dish: In a baking dish, place a layer of potato slices, then a layer of onion rings. Pour a layer of cheese sauce over them. Repeat until you run out of ingredients, finishing with cheese sauce on top.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the top is bubbly and golden.
  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

You can substitute different types of cheese, like Gruyère or Pepper Jack, for added flavor. Consider using low-fat milk or a dairy-free alternative for a lighter version.
