A quick and tangy buttermilk syrup perfect for pancakes, waffles, and more.
Ingredients
- 1 cup buttermilk (240 ml)
- 1 cup granulated sugar (200 g)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (113 g)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda (4 g)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 ml)
Instructions
- Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, add the buttermilk, granulated sugar, and butter.
- Heat gently: Place over medium heat and stir until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves, about 3–4 minutes.
- Simmer briefly: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, watching closely. Allow it to bubble for 1–2 minutes while stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat: Take the pan off the burner before the next step.
- Add baking soda and vanilla: Carefully whisk in the baking soda and vanilla extract. The mixture will foam and rise.
- Cool and thicken: Let the syrup sit for 5–10 minutes. It will thicken as it cools. Stir once more and transfer to a serving container.
Notes
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. Warm gently to reheat.
